Croaker fishing remains good. We caught close to our limit last night. We only have about a week left of croaker. We also had some Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Check out the nice red drum (probably 30 pounds or so) I caught on my line while croaker fishing. It took around a half hour to get him in the boat as I was fighting it on 17-pound test and a little Shimano 4000 reel we use for catching croaker and spot. To the guys’ dismay we had to release it as there is an 18-27 inch slot limit.
There is a lot of surface activity around. Casting, live-lining or trolling is excellent right now.
There are lots of Spanish mackerel this year. It is my favorite fish to eat in the Bay, other than possibly redfish (red drum). These tasty fish should be around until the third week of September. Lots of 4-5 pound bluefish have shown up down the Bay. Try an evening trip and we’ll go live-line for these fighters. You had better hang on to you rod because blues that size go absolutely nuts over live spot. Evenings this time of year are also a great time to run into a school of red drum. Late summer fishing is the best.
